SMITHFIELD JUSTICE CAMPAIGN IS GOING NATIONAL AND WE NEED YOUR HELP

June 19th  we kick off nationwide starting in seven cities

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union and Change To Win,  in coalition with immigrant, civil rights, religious, and student organizations are fighting to help achieve dignity and justice on the job at Smithfield Packing.

Smithfield Packing (a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods) in Tar Heel North Carolina is the largest pork processing plant in the world, where almost 5,500 workers slaughter and pack 30,000 hogs per day. Working at a dizzying pace to put bacon and ham in our grocery stores and on our dinner table, Smithfield workers suffer from an extraordinarily high injury rate, the termination of union supporters and workers injured on the job, sexual harassment, threats of deportation, racial violence, and poverty level wages.  The counties are rife with the walking wounded, former workers crippled from permanent injuries and fired.

Deep in rural North Carolina, Smithfield has long attempted to exploit racial divisions amongst its workforce, pitting Latino workers against African-American workers. But in a newly discovered sense of power, the workers are coming together along with a broad coalition of groups dedicated to Justice at Smithfield.

One hundred years since Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle exposed the horrific conditions meatpackers of the meatpacking industry, time has stood still at Smithfield. Join us starting June 19th as we say No to the Jungle of 2006, and Yes to Dignity, Justice, and Human Rights.
